Lighting Design Tips

– article written by Elizabeth Gibson –

With summer upon us, our showrooms are flooded with customers looking to enhance their outdoor spaces through the inclusion of outdoor lighting. Last month, our Toledo showroom held a landscape lighting seminar for the public. Here are some helpful tips from our expert on how best to approach a low voltage landscape lighting system.

Whether the goal is safety or ambiance, a thoughtfully designed landscape lighting system truly creates an inviting atmosphere encouraging homeowners to get the most out of their outdoor spaces. Bob Eskin from Kichler demonstrated the good and bad approaches to designing a system, while taking questions from attendants.

Surprising to many is that you can actually save money by working with our experienced team, as opposed to trying to do it yourself. We can offer suggestions on how to get the biggest bang for your buck with your landscape lighting. As Bob pointed out, the goal is not to over-light a space, but rather to choose a few focal points to achieve the most effective and pleasant lighting.

A sprinkling of path lights. A soft flood of light on a favorite natural element. Or perhaps a strategically placed downlight mounted in the canopy of a tree creating a “moonlight” effect. These are all techniques used by our team to bring lighting to your outdoor spaces.

“You can always add on. That’s the beauty of a low voltage system,” Eskin explained. Start small and add. You’ll find your lighting can grow as your greenery matures.
